Archives for October 2012
it is that time of year when everything piles up at once. reading, writing, meeting people, finding time to cook dinner, and oh my goodness halloweek has struck. for this chaos, the english have found the perfect solution: tea.
If you are cold, tea will warm you. If you are too heated, it will cool you. If you are depressed, it will cheer you. If you are excited, it will calm you.
– William E. Gladstone, 1865
a cup of tea is easy to make, and in these wintry months (because it is still autumn after all, although freezing), it warms me up, inside and out. ★
inspiral in camden town was my first stop on my spontaneous jaunt to london. normally i go for their homemade cashew ice cream, but this time, i arrived just in time for lunch. the staff was friendly as ever, patiently explaining the different ordering options for a complicated menu. i asked what kind of milk they offer with their hot chocolate: “soy, almond, oat, and coconut, and an extra 20p for cow’s milk.” i was amused, and quite pleased with my first sample of oat milk. i enjoyed my delicious lunch overlooking the canal from their heavily window-ed yet cosy café. very relaxing. ★
at home we have boxes of halloween decorations. this particular set – pooh, the cup, the bag – have never been particularly special, but here, as my only tributes to halloween, they are suddenly significant. halloween is the best holiday ever so i like to make a couple of decorative changes to my space to acknowledge its spooky spectaculosity.★
essay-writing is a combination of a lot of fun and a lot of not fun. i love writing, but can still be a grueling process, having to pick the arguments that go together and phrase them exactly as brilliantly as they sound in my head (where they’re all muddled together in a ball of general-brilliant-idea yarn). so, to make essay-writing mornings something to look forward to, i go to g&d’s. something about the atmosphere and the familiarity makes it the most comfortable place for me to churn out a seemingly horrific first draft that i can turn into a polished essay with much less editing that i think. ★
