Some people have happily moved along to Hunger Games and Game of Thrones. Some people believe that Harry Potter is only for children “for children” and look at you funny if you show up at an event “for all ages”. And ever since Primark started selling Harry Potter apparel, Hogwarts shirts are no longer for just the nerdiest of us to people who bought them just because they liked the colour or something.
But some of us have held on. Harry is in our hearts as much as he ever was.
My first Potter release was Goblet of Fire, and because my copy had been gifted in the form of an Amazon delivery, I was home, with my sister, in my new room. We sat there, in our capes, manually updating a countdown to midnight in Word Art on the Windows 98. Even though my book would not arrive until 8am the next day, it still felt like the right thing to do.
Sometimes today’s mellower Potter community feels like a Goblet of Fire launch for 2, so I would like to invite you to join mine. The internet is great for stuff like that.
So to start, here is a song I wrote in the summer of ’07. Lyrics my own, music not so much. Enjoy.
“Sweet as Snape” – Harry Potter Song Parody of Gwen Stefani’s “Sweet Escape”
that Severus Snape
a greasy little fifth year you say
everyone hated him cause everyone was listening to James
when he’s hanging upside when he said Levicorpus
just hanging around by the beech before us
said that’s the sad day when he called her a mudblood
and I cried for Snape
the bravest man in the whole world
they said he was in love with that girl
Lily Evans
they were best friends
and don’t you think that he’s pretty sweet?
that Snape is so sweet
he wasn’t helping Voldemort
we should have trusted Dumbledore
saw his Patronus
he was being honest
and don’t you think that’s pretty neat?
sweet as snape sweet snape
woo hoo yee hoo
he always frowns
but wouldn’t you have too at this point
let’s talk about
the sacrifice he made for that boy
he took a vow
and even though he didn’t seem kind
when he was in a bind
he left this message to find
to Harry
Voldemort is so crazy
all his thinking’s so hasty
proud of legilimancy
I can see that you hate me
hopefully you believe me
when you hear about Lily
won’t you please look at me
and I cried for Snape
the bravest man in the whole world
they said he was in love with that girl
Lily Evans
they were best friends
and don’t you think that he’s pretty sweet?
That Snape is so sweet
he wasn’t helping Voldemort
we should have trusted Dumbledore
saw his Patronus
he was being honest
and don’t you think that’s pretty neat?
sweet as snape sweet snape
woo hoo yee hoo
that severus snape
that severus snape
when he’s hanging upside when he said Levicorpus
just hanging around by the beech before us
said that’s the sad day when he called her a mudblood
and I cried for Snape
the bravest man in the whole world
they said he was in love with that girl
Lily Evans
they were best friends
and don’t you think that he’s pretty sweet?
that Snape is so sweet
he wasn’t helping Voldemort
we should have trusted Dumbledore
saw his Patronus
he was being honest
and don’t you think that’s pretty neat?
sweet as snape sweet snape
woo hoo yee hoo
that severus snape
that severus snape
Happy birthday, Harry.
Happy birthday, Jo.
P.S. If you still have Harry in your heart, you would LOVE Lumos Your Life. Board the Hogwarts Express for a tour through how the houses can help you light up your daily rituals and find your magical mission. Plus there’s a little tiny Taylor Swift-meets-Harry Potter song enclosed…
